WAKISO, Uganda — Absa Bank Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by planting 1,000 trees at Buwagga Secondary School on World Earth Day, April 22.
The initiative is part of the bank’s ambitious Million Trees Initiative, which aims to plant one million trees across Uganda within three years.
The tree-planting event brought together Absa employees, students, school staff, community members, and local leaders. Their shared goal: to green the planet, one tree at a time, starting with school compounds and community spaces.
A Greener Future, One Tree at a Time
To date, Absa Bank Uganda has planted over 755,000 trees, making it one of the country’s leading corporate contributors to national reforestation.
At Buwagga Secondary School, the newly planted trees are expected to serve multiple purposes—providing fruit, shade, and a richer ecosystem for students while contributing to Uganda’s carbon offset targets.
“We’re not just planting trees—we’re investing in education, health, and sustainable livelihoods,” said Robinah Mukasa Kamuntu, Absa’s Head of Communications and Citizenship. “By working with schools like Buwagga, we empower youth to become climate champions and stewards of their communities.”
Investing in Youth, Climate, and Community
World Earth Day, observed globally every April 22, underscores the urgent need to protect the planet. For Absa Bank Uganda, the day isn’t just symbolic—it’s actionable.
The partnership with My Tree Initiative and schools like Buwagga reflects Absa’s focus on inclusive, community-rooted environmental action.
Trees planted during this campaign are carefully selected for their agro-ecological benefits—including food production, soil conservation, and water retention.
These efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also serve as outdoor classrooms for environmental education.
“We are deeply grateful to our partners—My Tree Initiative, Buwagga Secondary, and local leaders—whose support makes this mission possible,” the bank added in a statement.
On Track to One Million Trees
Absa’s tree-planting campaign is a core pillar of its sustainability strategy. The bank aims to reach the one-million-tree milestone through continued partnerships with schools, local governments, and environmental groups.
With 755,608 trees already in the ground, and new projects in the pipeline, Absa Bank Uganda is well on track. The goal isn’t just numbers—it’s about shaping resilient, eco-conscious communities and contributing meaningfully to Uganda’s national reforestation efforts.
From Wakiso to the rest of the country, Absa’s message is clear: the future is green, and it starts now.
